Divided nations

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government published a policy paper on Taiwan that reasserted China's claim to sovereignty over the island and opposed Taiwan's bid for UN membership. The paper, issued on Aug 31, 1993 and entitled 'The Taiwan Question and Reunification of China,' has dampened support for China in Taiwan as indicated by a Sep 6 poll showing that only 17% of Taiwanese think of China as a friendly country. The paper's reiteration of past policy suggests that the Chinese government has not kept abreast of changing circumstances such as the growth of democracy in Taiwan.

A case of nerves: Chinese military manoeuvres cause alarm

Article Abstract:

Harsh words from China's Foreign Ministry and a set of military exercises held near Taiwan stirred near-panic on the island in the first days of July, 1995 and sent the stockmarket down 2.4%. Top politicians soon asked news agencies and top govt officials to play down the news, restoring some calmness. The events followed Chinese anger over President Lee Teng-hui's visit to the US and planned trip to Japan, both to visit alma maters. Taiwan's likely Sept bid to rejoin the United Nations should cause further friction.

Waiting for the call

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's application to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) is gaining support within the international business community. However, China is strongly objecting to Taiwan's bid and is demanding that its application be approved first. Taiwan is the world's 12th-largest trading country and 90% of its exports are absorbed by GATT member countries. However, the absence of official trade links between China and Taiwan may affect their bid to become GATT members.
