Do dud directors deserve a bad name?

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry have tried to ensure that once a company director has been judged a failure he will not be able to resume his position in a new company. A survey in 1996 showed that 37% of people working as directors have been involved with companies which have failed since 1992. Although some of the failures have been not been due to unsatisfactory behaviour by the director, some have repeatedly caused companies to go bankrupt. A better system of tracing this type of director should be put in place as well as increased publicity for poor performance.

Do the dividends justify the means?

Article Abstract:

The privatisation of British utilities raised 60 billion pounds sterling yet very few people who bought these shares went on to buy shares in other companies or considered the stock market as a realistic way of investing their money. The sale of utilities shares was promoted as a get-rich-quick scheme and the public was not encouraged to view the stock market as a long-term investment. Also, it is seen as exclusive and complicated. The American public has a more balanced attitude towards their stock market and is not afraid to invest in it.
