Doctor, doctor

Article Abstract:

A 1992 ruling from the European Commission makes it illegal for manufacturers of prescription drugs to sell their goods directly to European consumers. They are not permitted to advertise their products in the popular media, and may only advertise them in medical journals and other professional publications. Drug manufacturers are increasingly turning to patient support groups in order to make contact with patients. It is clear that the advertising of prescription drugs must be regulated, but allowing consumer advertising would boost public interest in health.
