Domestic air travel slows as carriers cut back service

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian airline industry is suffering from a slack. The number of flights in the domestic sector has dropped by 40% and is expected to reduce by as much as 80% by the end of 1998. The airline crisis may be attributed to the current financial crisis. Moreover, under Pres Suharto's reign, the industry was heavily deregulated. The Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesian Airways, intends to reorganize the whole company to help its deteriorating condition. Plans include retrenchment, debt settlement and encouragement of foreign investments into the company.
