Dragging English Heritage into the modern world

Article Abstract:

Jocelyn Stevens is chairman of English Heritage. His first year in office has been marked by controversy as he has pushed through organisational and political reforms. Stevens aims to reduce bureaucracy within the organisation, making the process of gaining approval for alterations to buildings quicker. He also promotes English Heritage's role as an advisory service and is trying to foster a proactive, enabling attitude. Stevens criticises conservation purists and believes English Heritage should do more toensure buildings are kept in use.

How a conciliatory approach can win over the planners

Article Abstract:

Architect Chris Williamson disputes the view that planners are obstructive to good architecture. Williamson advocates listening to the views of all the concerned parties and using the architect's skills to incorporate their views into the design without compromising the basic principles. Two projects where this aproach has been successful are the facade of Putney Bridge Station, London, England and a church hall extension in Pinner, Middlesex, England.

Article Abstract:

Architect Hawkins/Brown has recently remodelled a building which is part of the headquaters of the Henry Moore Foundation. A new building has also been added. The new building has a traditional looking pitched roof with a mono-pitched glazed link connecting the existing buildings. Internally the building has clay-paved floors, white walls and American white oak detail.
