Drawbacks of Thailand's plan to heal its banks

Article Abstract:

Experts believe that Thailand's $7.23 billion rehabilitation program for commercial banks would be instrumental in restoring the vigor of the financial sector. The plan is not only likely to regain consumer confidence, but also provide adequate financial leverage to commercial banks in addressing bad loans. However, the government must abandon its plan to restore capital ratios at all costs since the approach guarantee minimal recovery on the part of taxpayers and banking institutions.

Shareholders should be the ones to pay for bank errors

Article Abstract:

Bank shareholders are the ones who set the rules for the management of the bank and the selection of managers so they should be the ones to pay for their managers' mistakes. Shareholders should be more flexible while giving attention to asset quality and realistic pricing of bank assets as failure to do so led to the financial crisis currently being experienced by Japanese banks. Regulators should also enforce stricter guidelines so bank activities are checked.
