Drawing lines: Singapore cites professor for contempt

Article Abstract:

Singapore's latest efforts to control press criticism of the government show its misunderstanding of its present position and the changes it will soon have to face. A Jan 17, 1995, court ruling against a US professor and the 'International Herald Tribune' is an example of the Singapore's attitude. This attitude lessens people's faith is their sources of information and leads to rumors. The growth of the Internet and other media may soon render government controls irrelevant, but businessmen will steer clear of volatile countries.
