Article Abstract:

Japan's Nintendo Company Ltd and Sega Enterprises Ltd are competing vigorously to improve their market share in the booming video games industry. Market leader Nintendo earned a profit of 42 billion yen while Sega, its closest competitor, earned 14 billion in six months during 1992. Nintendo's strengths are its cheap hardware and high quality software while Sega's strength is its technological sophistication and innovation. Although Nintendo is better established in the Japanese market, Sega has outsold Nintendo in the US and European markets because of its aggressive advertising, reduced prices and good titles.

Article Abstract:

The Australian government has been sending conflicting signals to the country's business sector regarding industrial policy. While the Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce is intent on pursuing an interventionist approach, the Department of Treasury and Finance advocates a market-forces policy. Similarly, government procurement as a stimulus to industry and venture capital formation have also been characterized by inconsistent government policies.

Article Abstract:

Insufficient private sector funding of research is undermining the competitiveness of Australian industry. Since the 1980s, industries spent a mere 0.45% of GDP on research and development. Around 2/3 of manufacturing firms in Australia are foreign-owned, hence there is little incentive to perform research and development. Similarly, Australian industry suffers from a lack of international marketing experience and isolation from global markets.
