Dynamics of despair

Article Abstract:

The majority of Vietnam's eight million minorities live in extreme poverty due to government neglect. Subsidies for basic necessities such as education, health and food production have dried up in some areas. Agriculture is hampered by lack of roads, electricity and telecommunications facilities. Southward migration of minorities and influx of ethnic Vietnamese in the search for arable land have also caused some land disputes. Hanoi has legislated racial equality, but minorities remain few in the national government and in civil service because of their low literacy rates.

The tilling fields: rice glut worries Vitnamese farmers

Article Abstract:

Vietnam needs to find bigger markets for the country's surplus of rice. Bumper crops, which have pulled down the price of unhusked rice by Dong 200, are largely due to the success of the government's agricultural policy. In 1988, Vietnam decided to privatize unproductive farm cooperatives, extending support through new fields and irrigation systems. However, while agricultural production increased, the shortage of currency and capital was not addressed, disabling food companies from absorbing the glut.

Conservative criticism: Singapore's restoration bid draws mixed reviews

Article Abstract:

Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority has helped guide the restoration and refurbishment of many historic shophouses, with mixed results. While many restorations are successful in themselves, and some house highly appropriate businesses, one strip along Boat Quay now features 21 pubs in the heart of a restoration district. Still, once-crumbling Chinatown shophouses now go for $1.1 million or more, and the functional basic design serves as an inspiration to architects.
