In most Asian countries, there are more cellular telephones being used, compared to number of subscribers to the Internet. Mobile telephones provide internet access and may have the edge for electronic commerce business.

As China's mobile phone market begins to mature (analysts predict that 170 million Chinese will own mobile phones within the next four years), prices for handsets have fallen 20%. Wholesale mobile telephone distributor Global Tech Holdings seeks to preserve its profit margin by shifting to retail sale of inexpensive handsets.

SmarTone Telecommunications is planning to launch an expansive Internet service through which it would anchor its future success. The project was launched in response to the dwindling revenue rates recorded by the company in 1998, when profit fell by as much as 41%. The decline in revenue was caused by the company's attempt to provide value-adding services to its subscribers.
