EU investigates Germany's aid to two state banks

Article Abstract:

The European Union is investigating whether government aid to two state-managed banks in Germany violated euro zone state-aid regulations. The German government has stated that it is certain the aid, totaling $38.9 bil, was not illegal. The two banks receiving assistance are Sachsen LB and IKB Deutsche Industriebank AG.

France acts to ease iTunes-iPod law, but Apple is wary

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer Inc. of the United States, iTunes online store and iPod music player are under new copyright law in France that would make the products more compatible with rival products. The American computer company responded by announcing that it may withdraw it's online music downloads from the French market.

Fines for collusion are soaring in Europe: regulators attempt to keep up with U.S. on enforcing rules

Article Abstract:

Europe's single market has fostered a growing emphasis on steeper fines for cartels and collusion, bringing it more in line with U.S. standards. European Commissioner Neelie Kroes has steadily increased fines during her tenure, with penalties rising from 390.2 mil euro in 2004 to 1.8 bil euro in 2006.
