EU merger control reforms: an appraisal

Article Abstract:

The reform of the European Union Merger Control Regulation (MCR) has been approved by many businesses although a number of mergers are not included in the revision. The reforms are due to be implemented on Mar. 1, 1998 and they will be reviewed again before Jul 2000. The 1998 reform of the MCR extends its range to include full function joint ventures. Companies which have a global turnover of more than ECU 2.5 billion or have turnovers of over ECU 100 million in three member countries will be included in the new thresholds. MCR was introduced to stop uncompetitive business practices.

Race relations

Article Abstract:

It is clear that there are still far too many cases of racial discrimination in Asia. Discrimination of this kind is obviously a violation of human rights, but it must also be acknowledged that a person's race or colour cannot really ever be totally overlooked. Asia must be more aware of racial issues, but must avoid becoming so sensitive to race that a negative form of political correctness emerges, as has been the case in the US.
