EUROPE: DIGITAL/RE-RECORDING MATERIALS MARKET

Article Abstract:

Sales of telephones in western Europe are forecast to represent 12mn units in 2003, compared to 7.5mn in 2002, 3.8mn in 2001, and 0.8mn in 2000, while camcorders are expected to progress from 2.07mn units in 2000, to 3.13mn (2001), to 4.31mn (2002), and to 5.59mn units in 2003. As for PDA's, these are expected to progress as follows; 2.37mn units (2000), 2.93mn (2001), 3.41mn (2002), and 3.89mn (2003). Over the first six months of the year, sales in MiniDisc walkmans would be up by 52%, in terms of volume. According to ACNielsen, turnover on the analogue re-recordable cassette sector has experienced a 19% drop, while according to GfK, 86% of private copies are made on blank CD discs.

FRANCE: FORECAST FOR CONSUMER ELECTRONICS

Article Abstract:

The electronic consumer goods sector in France is expected to reach FFr 43bn in revenue by the end of the year 2000, following a 7% increase in spending during the first half of the year, according the latest figures made available by GfK. The total amount spent this year by households, on computer, telecoms, multimedia, and photographic goods, is expected to reach around FFr 87bn, in which the consumer electronic goods sector will present about 50% of the total. Households in France will spend FFr 3,613 on average this year on household electronic consumer goods.

France: Sharp presents portable DVD reader

Article Abstract:

Sharp Electronics France has presented a portable DVD reader, DV-L88S. In addition to DVD's, the machine supports audio and video CD's as well as CD-R's and CD-RW's recorded with the MP3 format. The machine includes a built-in li-ion battery which offers a range of up to four hours and a screen with a width of 21 cm and a resolution of 336,960 pixels. Retail price is EUR 1980.31.
