UNIFORM, HIGHER EXCISE ON MUVs

Article Abstract:

The government has slapped an uniform 30 percent excise duty from the earlier 25 percent on eight to 13 seater vehicles. The prices of the eight to 13 seater vehicles with a soft top will move up by Rs11,000 and hard top vehicle will move up by Rs14,000, excluding sales tax and octroi. The excise duty on cars is 40 percent. The multi utility vehicle (MUV) makers like Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Tempo, Hindustan Motors and Martui Udyog are likely to be affected. The Rs35,000-crore MUV segment sales declined by 34 percent and in 1998-99, the demand is likely to decline. (rk)

EXCISE SLAP ON TRACTORS LIKELY TO CUT RED TAPE

Article Abstract:

The Rs5,000-crore Indian tractor industry is satisfied with the government's announcement to impose eight percent excise duty on tractors below 1800 cc which will help them cut red tapism. The government has also de-reserved farm implements from the small scale industries list. The manufacturers of tractors with a capacity above 1800 cc were paying excise duty of 13 percent earlier and tractors below 1800 cc capacity had zero duty. (rk)
