Article Abstract:

The satellite boom in Asia was affected by the Asian financial crisis, but the Indian and Chinese markets have also kept out direct-to-home broadcasting. Locally-produced shows have attracted larger audiences than US productions. There is also excess capacity of satellites in Asia, though transponders can also be used for data which represents some hope for the market. The potential of interactive TV is also attractive, the the ideas of a home consumer market for the Internet is speculative.

Upward bound: WestLB

Article Abstract:

Private banking concerns in Germany are hoping that the banking commission will curb WestLB's ambitious plans to dominate the industry. WestLB is a public bank, and competitors are complaining that the state is effectively subsidizing it. Private banks are hoping to block an acquisition that would give WestLB a needed cash influx.

African wildlife is one of the continent's most important natural resources and popular tourist attractions, but despite increased committment to wildlife conservation, protection from poachers is not assured. The numbers of many species are rapidly declining because of continued hunting.
