The satellite boom in Asia was affected by the Asian financial crisis, but the Indian and Chinese markets have also kept out direct-to-home broadcasting. Locally-produced shows have attracted larger audiences than US productions. There is also excess capacity of satellites in Asia, though transponders can also be used for data which represents some hope for the market. The potential of interactive TV is also attractive, the the ideas of a home consumer market for the Internet is speculative.

WestLB is a public bank, and competitors are complaining that the state is effectively subsidizing it. Private banks are hoping to block an acquisition that would give WestLB a needed cash influx.
