Edging towards democracy

Article Abstract:

Elections in Tajikistan for a lower chamber for the country's new parliament have not met international standards, according to international monitors. The elections, held on Feb 27 2000, are the first for more than one party, and give some approximation of the political outlook of Tajikistan. An election for Senate is scheduled for Mar 23 2000. This is the only country in the region where an Islamic opposition party has been legalized, which gives the elections signifcance for the region as a whole.
