Education at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

The problem of the lack of prestige and power of architects, within construction teams, must be partly addressed through better education for young architects. Both educators and architectural practices need to look at architectural education to ensure the colleges and universities are producing suitably trained graduates. Courses must include management and commercial training along with specialised programmes of study for students. Architects have been suffering from a drop in salaries. Whilst courses teaching architecture face difficulties in finding good quality tutors.

The merry dance of fee collection

Article Abstract:

UK architects often find it very hard to obtain the balance of fees owed to them by clients after practical completion of a building, and legal action is sometimes necessary. This problem could be resolved if the architect switched to a system of billing regularly, ensuring that all fees due have been paid before the project handover stage has been reached. This would prevent architects having to threaten to withdraw their services, which they are very reluctant to do.

We need confidence born of competence

Article Abstract:

It is important that architecture students are given an insight into the judgements which they will be expected to make during their professional life. They must be trained in such a way that they are technically competent, as this will give them the confidence to give clear instructions. They must also be encourage to take on professional responsibility and discipline at an early stage.
