Encryption: DES Can Keep Your Data Safe

Article Abstract:

Data security is a major problem in data communication as electronic mail and other distributed office systems increase in number. So far the most reliable system for data encryption in the communication field has been the IBM encryption algorithm known as Data Encryption Standard (DES). This algorithm has not been cracked in ten years and is now available in large scale integrated circuit forms or encryption cards. The DES algorithm encrypts the data into an unintelligible code using a key value, and then decrypts the code with the same key data into the understandable data at the receiving point. DES can be used on Apple computers via Applesoft or Integer BASIC languages using the encryption card or chip after it has been initialized with the chosen key. The encryption card is pictured, and diagrams show the encryption-decryption process.

Savvy: The Program that Thinks for Itself

Article Abstract:

Savvy is a natural language system that is supposed to help the computer understand any question asked by a user in any language and grammatical sequence. The developer of the program, Excalibur Technologies Corp., used an adaptive pattern recognition system in designing Savvy. By establishing a 'give and take' questioning the average user can find answers to any problem regarding data already input to the computer. A photograph of the Savvy board, disks and manual is shown.
