Switzerland can indeed call itself a truly cosmopolitan country, with a total of 1,336,000 foreigners accounting for at least 19% of the resident population. Of the foreign resident population in the country, a considerable number are English speakers. While British Swiss residents top the list of foreign residents in Switzerland who speak English, Americans also comprise a substantial number. Most foreigners in Switzerland also choose English as their main lingua franca, including Indians, Japanese, Israelis, Scandinavians and Dutch.

Higher sales, higher profits

Article Abstract:

The year 1998 witnessed the recovery of the Swiss economy. The top 445 companies in the country exhibited significant sales growth. Furthermore, the number of companies that resorted to layoffs was greatly reduced. In terms of financial growth, banks and insurance firms showed improved activities based on their balance sheets. The highest earning companies were Novartis, Roche, Nestle and Holderbank, the international cement company.

Strengthening the ties

Article Abstract:

The relations between the US and Switzerland dates back to the drawing of the Federal Constitution in 1848. The Swiss Parliamentary structure patterned its National Council and the States Council on the US House of Representatives and Senate. The Federal Palace in Berne was also copied from the Washington Capitol's edifice. Business relations between the two countries is strong and remain unaffected by recessions.
