Enlargement and CAP reform

Article Abstract:

The European Union's (EU) common agricultural policy (CAP) is set to undergo substantial long-term changes and is expected to play an important role in the membership talks with the central and eastern European countries (CEC) that have applied to join the union. Agriculture is an important industry in many CEC nations where it accounts for an overall average 7.8% of GDP, against just 2.5% in the EU. The European Commission's white paper on the development of the CAP argues that agricultural reform should be undertaken gradually and that enlargement does not require immediate and sweeping reform of the CAP.

The Turkey-EU customs union

Article Abstract:

The customs union between the European Union (EU) and Turkey is due to take effect from 1 Jan, 1996, and is the culmination of a series of import/export agreements that have been in place since 1973. The new agreement, which includes tariff reductions on many industrial items, should increase EU exports to Turkey, which is the union's 10th-largest export destination. It is forecast that EU shipments to Turkey will double by the end of the century.
