Article Abstract:

Negotiations will continue to end the strike in the forestry industry which has lasted for two weeks in Finland. If the negotiations fail Finnish wood transport may stop on 10 September 1998. According to estimates by the forest industry, the possible sympathy strike would stop most raw wood transport in Finland. Also wood acceptance would stop on many plants. Saw mills would be affected the fastest. The production of newsprint and magazine paper would end in a few days. Fine paper and pulp production would be affected only within 2-3 weeks.

Article Abstract:

Finnish forest owners and UPM-Kymmene have agreed upon the new prices of standing timber. The price of pulpwood will increase by 5% and saw timber tree by 2%. The total effect will amount to 3%. UPM considers the result expensive. However, competitiveness was improved by there now being a range of variation for the price expectations. Finnish Enso and Mets liitto state they will follow the agreement in their pricing policies.
