Esquel cultivates independence, grows cotton in China

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong apparel manufacturer Esquel Group is trying to improve the quality of its fabrics by establishing its own cotton farms in Xinjiang, China. The farm venture is costing the company $82.4 million, yet will only supply a small portion of the company's cotton needs. Esquel's chairwoman, Marjorie Yang feels the investment is important for making the company more self-sufficient.

Banner year for flag makers in Asia

Article Abstract:

Taiwan-based Flagship Banner and Pendant Industrial Corp. has seen an increase in U.S. flag orders since the September 11 attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. In two weeks time, the company manufactured $434,100 worth of U.S. flags. Most American flags sold in the U.S. are made domestically, but some American entrepreneurs have enlisted the help of foreign companies in an effort to profit from the from the increased demand.
