Estimating output substitutability of hospital services: a distance function approach

Article Abstract:

Hospital estimates of the marginal costs and elasticity of transformation of hospital services in California and New York is measured using shadow prices. These estimates are also used to compare hospitals by ownership. The marginal rates of transformation and elasticities of subsitution of hospitals are compared with those of public hospitals. The shadow prices varied across samples but very little across ownership type implying similar tradeoffs on technology and ownership type.

The federal nursing minimum basic data set and hospital management in Belgium: a case study of a nursing department

Article Abstract:

Belgium's decision to implement the nursing minimum data set (NMDS), a nursing care information system, proved to be beneficial to the country's health care management. Since 1994, the implementation of NMDS on Belgian hospitals has resulted to marked improvement in management of patients and patient care. A case study of a major university hospital showed that implementation of NMDS resulted to enhancement of a nursing department's resource allocation.
