Estimating the mark-up over marginal cost: a panel analysis of Japanese firms 1971-1994

Article Abstract:

A novel technique of estimating mark-ups based on the short-term elasticity of the output to inputs, the factor share and the mark-up rate over marginal costs at the firm level is proposed. The methodology is applied to a group of Japanese firms in 21 industries covering a period of 24 years. The results indicate the existence of an imperfect competition, a differing mark-up rate with a skewed distribution and a strong procyclicality in mark-up over marginal cost in an industry characterized by a uniform sensitivity.

Receiver discretion in signalling models: information transmission to competing retailers

Article Abstract:

Receiver discretion plays an important role in any economic situation wherein signalling considerations are significant. A study shows that the manufacturer will not contort his wholesale price, as is common in separating equilibria, if the retail competition is adequately intense. It was also shown that the greater the intensity of retail competition, the less will the low-demand manufacturer signal by contorting his wholesale price away from its maximum information level.

Time series analysis of market power: evidence from G-7 manufacturing

Article Abstract:

The price mark-up in the primary manufacturing categories of the seven leading OECD nations has been approximated, employing Hall's method to measure market-power. It was found that majority of the manufacturing sectors in all the nations considered demonstrate market strength. Furthermore, in the seven countries considered, six are pro-cyclical. It was also found that outside competition has an unfavorable effect on mark-ups.
