Europe has to scratch its head

Article Abstract:

There is a need to control the European commission of the European Union (EU) following the resignation of all the European commissioners. An investigation into the commission has found evidence of fraud, nepotism and mismangement. The European parliament sought the resignation of one commissioner, Edith Cresson, but she refused to volunteer, and was backed by the commission's president, Jacques Santer. There is a need for a new president who is skilful and credible, as well as being able to tackle inefficiencyand corruption. The role of the commission has changed, and it has lost power since the time of former president, Jacques Delors.

Superpower Europe

Article Abstract:

There is a need for greater unity in Europe, if the European Union is to gain strength as a superpower. European also needs to take more responsibility for peacekeeping and invest in the reconstruction of the Balkans region. This is starting to happen, though the air strikes were largely a US affair. There are also divisions over trade and foreign policy. There are different views of what Europe's foreign policy should be, and this hampers Europe as a potential superpower.

Tremors across Europe
