Europe plans capacity hike

Article Abstract:

The European aircraft monitoring agency Eurocontrol will implement a full reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) in Jan 2002. Eurocontrol program manager Joe Sultana said a separation minimum of 1,000 ft instead of 2,000 ft will be enforced to above Flight Level 290 to properly equipped aircraft. This will result in six additional levels in 39 states and allow more aircraft to fly optimum flight levels. RVSM is touted to be one of the most cost effective means to increase capacity in European airspace.

Airlines stay in profit in 1999

Article Abstract:

Statistics from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) show that the world's scheduled airlines achieved an operating profit of 4.1% of operating revenues. ICAO also estimates that airline companies posted revenues of $306.5 billion, up 3.7% over 1998. Further, the organization revealed in its report that European and African carriers closed the 1999 fiscal year with positive operating results while Latin American/Carribean and the Middle East finished the year close to break-even.
