Europe' smuggled masses

Article Abstract:

The smuggling of migrants entering the European Union (EU) has become a business valued at between some $3 billion and $4 billion annually. It has increased as a result of Eastern Europe being opened up and internal EU borders coming down. Smuggling occurs across both sea and land routes. European governments are concerned about the involvement of organized crime, and because many immigrants apply for asylum once inside the EU. Germany is seeking harmonization of asylum rules, and has more applications for asylum than other EU countries.
