Europe's banking sector are slashing jobs and building resources through cross-border mergers in a play for global markets. Some central bankers and politicians have protectionist and nationalist worries that this could be a death knell for the homegrown banking sectors of European nations. Deutsche Bank AG is in the forefront.

Stage gets set for Italy's banks to consolidate

Article Abstract:

Banca Intesa S.p.A. of Italy is in acquisition talks with Sanpaolo IMI S.p.A. also of Italy. The consolidation would be valued at 50 billion Euros (approximately $65 billion)and create the largest banking interest in Italy. The banking industry in Italy is fragmented and ripe for consolidations.
