Article Abstract:

The concern over the soon-to-be-adopted euro system for countries of the European Union has many European bankers pursuing mergers as a safety precaution. Some of the expected economic consequences of the euro include the reduction of currency trading and increased competition.

The European Community has been unable to coordinate the bank deposit insurance regulations of individual countries. A complicated and confusing number of differing rules exist regarding banks with branches in other countries.
