Evaluation of three production planning procedures for the use of recipe flexibility

Article Abstract:

Three types of production planning procedures for the use of recipe flexibility to cope with the uncertainty in supply and demand were investigated. The optimal procedure optimizes the use of material over a planning horizon which is equal to the material replenishment leadtime, taking into consideration customer orders and knowledge of the distribution function of future demand. The deterministic procedure is similar to the optimal procedure, but it assumes a deterministic demand level for unknown orders. On the other hand, the myopic procedure optimizes the use of material over only the accepted customer orders.

Multi-stage newsboy problem: a dynamic model

Article Abstract:

A dynamic, continuous-time generalization of the single-period newsboy problem is characterized by a number of the newsboys whose operations are organized and controlled in sequential stages. With the aid of the maximum principle the continuous-time problem is reduced to determine optical production order quantity, ranking machines and buffers by calculating a limited number of switching time points and assigning production rates over the switching points with respect to the machine and buffer ranks.

An investigation of lead-time effects in manufacturing/remanufacturing systems under simple PUSH and PULL control strategies

Article Abstract:

The effects of lead-time duration and variability on total expected costs in manufacturing/remanufacturing were investigated using the PUSH and PULL control strategies proposed by van der Laan et al (1995). It was shown that manufacturing lead-times exert more influence on system costs than remanufacturing lead-times for both control strategies. In addition, cost reduction may sometimes arise due a larger remanufacturing lead-time and a larger variability in the manufacturing lead-time.
