Ever decreasing circles

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive consolidation in the insurance industry in the US and the European Union. Most of this has been local in nature, with insurers seeking local deals to boost shareholder value. Reinsurance, industrial lines and brokerage are basically global operations, but the retail insurance business is still developing on a local basis. Within Europe, critical mass is the main driving force behind insurance industry consolidation, rather than European monetary union. In the US, mergers are being prompted by the need to gain scale economies and market share.

A mutually agreeable solution

Article Abstract:

There has generally been strong support from the general public for the demutualization of UK building societies and insurance companies. However, the case of Nationwide, where members voted against conversion, indicates that this is a complex issue. Building societies and insurance companies which still have mutual status need to ensure that they understand their members and how to communicate with them. In many cases, the best way to influence members is through branch staff.

UK life industry lets go. (demutualisation deals in UK life industry)

Article Abstract:

Until recently there had been few demutualisations in the UK insurance industry, and the General Accident Group acquisition of Provident Mutual Life Assurance Association is seen as the first of a spate of acquisition and rationlisation activity. All UK mututals are incorporated under the companies legislation but have only one fund, unlike proprietary insurance companies. Demutualisation involves transferring the whole mutual business to a company with share capital.
