Article Abstract:

Pressure groups are common inmature democracies, and they have been seen as problematic because large companies can organize more easily than the public, so may be able to influence government unduly. Pressure groups are especially noticeable in the US, but they are also important elsewhere, in Germany, France and Japan, for example. Defenders of pressure groups see them as a way for people to influence governments in areas where thay have particular expertise, and between elections. Democracy has a number of shortcomings, but it is capable of evolution.

On the yellow brick road

Article Abstract:

The US has become world leader, war appears less of a problem, and democracy is on the advance. Progress can be reversed, as history has taught us. There have also been problems such as AIDS and genocide in the last decades of the 20th century. Liberal democracy is needed to tackle major problems such as pollution, and democracies have a number of attractions for people in the 1990s. The future cannot easily be predicted, and the only sure forecast is that many forecasts made in the 1990s will turn out to be mistaken.
