Taiwan's Nationalist Party has retired its old leadership and hopes new reform efforts will enable the party to keep power from the recently legalized Democratic Progressive Party. A two-party democracy in Taiwan signifies a welcome change from the single-party dominance of the past forty years.

The future of East Asia's oldest political party, Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT), is in doubt following its loss of majority in the Dec 1, 2001, election. The KMT's errors have included personality clashes amongst its leaders and a continuing commitment to Taiwanese reunification with China.

Factions of the Kuomintang, Taiwan's majority party, are blaming the prime minister, Hau Pei-tsun, for the party's poor showing in the last election. With younger, native-born Taiwanese gaining power in the Kuomintang, Hau will soon be ousted.
