Extending inside out

Article Abstract:

Architects Loates-Taylor Shannon integrated interior and exterior living spaces by using large glazed sliding doors in the kitchen extension for a semi-detached home. The preparation section of the kitchen is within the existing walls of the building. The dining section, with full-height glazing on two sides, extends beyond this, and a timber deck outside the windows completes the spatial integration. The architects created an uncluttered appearance for the kitchen by using full-height white cupboards along the length of one wall.

Postcard from the Edge: an enlightened outlook: Stephenson Somerville Bell has transformed the interior of a Cheshire house to take advantage of its view of Alderley Edge

Article Abstract:

A 1930s detached house was transformed by Stephenson Somerville Bell to take advantage of its view of Alderley Edge, a sandstone outcrop on the Cheshire plain. A new garden room features minimally detailed glass walls with floor and roof planes extending beyond the walls. Outside the garden room is a slatted timber terrace raised above garden level. A group of metal chains are used instead of an intrusive downpipe, to take rainwater into a pebble bed on the terrace.

An enlightened approach

Article Abstract:

The innovatory methods used to renovate the Duveen wing of the National Portrait Gallery in London, England has revitalized the gallery considerably. This part of the gallery was built in the 1930s and had become a very unattractive area for the public. The use of glass and natural light by the architect CZWG has increased not only the space to hang pictures but has made the area seem more expansive and welcoming to visitors.
