FRANCE: CASINO'S OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGY

Article Abstract:

Casino, the French retail chain, intends to increase its turnover per square metre to FFr 50,000 by 2005, compared with FFr 42,000 at present, as part of its Casino 2005 plan. The group is making commitments to its customers on three points - price, quality, and 'easy living' while strengthening its image as a company with good citizenship. For example it is soon going to distribute 150,000 booklets on food safety. Casino also wants to stress employee training and flexibility, and it is going to strengthen its profit-sharing systems at the local level. Casino posted a 10% rise in the number of clients which have made Casino their main retail chain to 28.5% of the total between June 1999 and June 2000. The average expenditure per visit has climbed to EUR 44.52, behind Champion with EUR 49.85, but ahead of Atac with 43.30. Champion has benefited from its efforts in terms of price; it has reached an index of 102-102.5 compared with 106 previously. It will take time to measure the impact of this price repositioning on the group's image, but Champion posted a 7.9% rise in turnover in 2000, compared with a 5.7% rise for the entire sector according to the Federation of Commerce and Distribution Companies (FCD). Champion has 430 supermarkets and it represents 4.9% of food sales in supermarkets and discount stores in France and it has a 2.5% market share including hypermarkets.
