FRANCE: INTERNET USAGE RISES

Article Abstract:

There was a 10.2% rise in the number of computers with Internet access in France from third quarter 2000 to fourth quarter 2000, with 9.2mn computers connected to the Internet at end 2000, according to a survey by IDC France, the 'Barometre Trimestriel Internet'. Growth in the business sector was 14.5%, accounting for 59% of computers connected to the Internet. For the whole of 2000, overall growth should be less than in 1999, when a lot of households bought equipment. The consumer market is decelerating, mainly due to a decline in promotional offers, but the actual number of Internet users is rising, with several members of a household using the same computer. The first estimates of IDC indicate that growth of computers connected to the Internet is falling in first quarter 2001, to 9.8%, mainly due to the sharp fall in sales of computers in the business sector in last nine months 2000.
