FRANCE: PHARMACIES VERSUS SUPERMARKETS

Article Abstract:

The conflict between French pharmacists and supermarkets and hypermarkets concerning health and hygiene products, particularly the sale of food supplements appears to be a long way from being resolved. The Angers court of Appeals has asked for a new expert opinion on vitamin C. This decision has come have it told the Carrefour Geant, Monoprix, Hyper U, and Leclerc retail chains to stop selling vitamin C. It will take several months for the results of the expert opinion to be known. In the meantime, the Professional Syndicate for Health and Hygiene Stores intends to continue its fight against pharmacies. Its goal is to have food product supplements and vitamin C (products which do not have marketing authorisation) allowed to be sold freely in supermarkets and hypermarkets. Only a regulatory decision can put an end to this affair and enable health and hygiene products to develop in supermarkets and hypermarkets.
