FRANCE: REVIEW OF THE MOUSQUETAIRES

Article Abstract:

The Mousquetaires, founded in 1969, now represents a turnover of FFr 230bn, including FFr 147.3bn made in France. It now has 3,656 food stores, compared with 75 in 1969, with 11 retail trains, including 1,661 units in France, and 715 Relais des Mousquetaires. The concept by which each company head must devote at least a third of their work time to in service to the group appears to be the key to the Mousquetaires success. They remain faithful to their low-price policy, and intend to continue to develop the Intermarche retail chain in France. In order to do this, it is going increase the number of applications to the Departemental Commissions for Trade Facilities, in 1999. Intermarche stores are to be expanded to have at least 2,000 square metres of sales space and all Intermarche stores must adopt the new supermarket concept by 2005. This new concept aims to optimise the group's private labels selection, which are expected to represent 40% of the turnover of Intermarche within three years compared with 28% at present.

FRANCE: A NEW ORGANISATION FOR CONTINENT

Article Abstract:

In France, Continent is testing a new hypermarket management system in its Mont Saint Aignan hypermarket. This new operating system and hierarchical organisation is based on linearity, with the separation of management functions and events in departments, replacing a single department head who handles everything with a team of specialists - one in charge of food, one in charge of non-food, and on in charge of the store's marketing. Continent's national management says that other systems are also being tested. The one which works best will become the model for all of the retail chain's stores.
