FRANCE: SNCF AND VNT TEAM UP AGAINST ROADS

Article Abstract:

The SNCF, the French railroad company and Voies Navigables de France (VNF), which manages the river transport network, have teamed up to launch a joint promotion for their clients. According to the SNCF, the rail and river transport are complementary, since river transport may cross saturated railroad pathways. This joint offer is expected to increase the SNCF and VNF market share compared with road transport, although there are some difficulties. VNF as a manager has now decision-making power for river transport. It has no influence concerning the renewal of the river fleet, which has become obsolete. By transferring part of the railroad freight traffic to navigable waterways, the SNCF will be able to concentrate on the traceability of wagons and punctuality.
