FRANCE: RICE SALES FELL BY MORE THAN 4% IN 1998

Article Abstract:

Rice sales values were down by 4.8% in France in the year ending February 1998 (by volume the decline was 4.6%). This decline can be explained by emerging consumer preferences for fresh products such as ready-to-eat salads/meals and the popularity of other cereals (such as pre-cooked wheat and couscous). By value, bulk long-grain rice sales (40.2% of total rice sales) were down 10.2%, sales of perfumed long-grain rice (37.2% of total sales) were up 4%, sales of long-grain rice in sachets (17.6% of total) were down 8.5%, sales of round rice (3.3% of total) were down 7.5% and sales of wholemeal long-grain rice (1.7% of total) were down 2.2%. Thus only perfumed rice registered a progression (+10.1% by volume). Soufflet Alimentaire recorded the best progression in sales (up 14.2% in the period ending November 1998 according to ACNielsen). It will soon launch a 5-product range of organic rice under the brand-name Vivien Paille. In order to boost rice consumption, manufacturers are placing the emphasis on 4 main areas: exotic products, local products, practical products and products for well-being.

FRANCE: SNACK CHEESES AND CHEESES EATEN HOT

Article Abstract:

Snack cheeses are booming because of the development of cheeses to be heated, eating on the go, and snacking. The segment of cheeses to be eaten hot represented 2,500 tonnes in 1998. Breaded cheeses and cheese nuggets re represent 52.5% of this segment, up 2.2%; fondues represent 24.8%, up 12.5%; goat cheese to cook represented 19.5%, up 13.2%, and other cheeses, including raclette represented 3.2%, down 34.4%. The leader on the segment is Rambol's Menu Fromage, followed by President/Lactalis' Crousti'Cho, and Bel's Tchise. Crousti'Cho has introduced a new product made with puff pastry and a cheese preparation, while Menu Fromage has added Paves au Chevre goat cheese coated with hazelnut, raclette coated with potatoes, and camembert coated with three cereals. The trend to snacking has boosted appetiser cheeses, up 1% in volume and up 36.8% in value in 1998, and mini-cheeses. French households consume an average of a a kilo of cooking cheese per month. The volume of sliced and cubed cheese now represents 3,500 tonnes, up 27% in 1998, and feta represents 2,300 tonnes, up 18%.
