Failing a capital challenge: The reconstruction of Berlin has produced largely dull buildings that are influenced more by big business than by the city itself

Article Abstract:

Formula architecture, built to strict codes, is emerging throughout large areas of Berlin. the Friedrichstrasse is no longer the real centre of Berlin, and the 50-year division of Berlin drove the area downhill. The street is now dominated by anodyne new blocks, offices and luxury apartments. The DDR destroyed some fine buildings, replacing them with bad ones such as the 1970s Palast der Republik. However there is some good work underway, such as Norman Foster's rebuilding of the Reichstag, von Gerkan/Marg's new railway stations and the regeneration of the Hackescher Markt area.

Sense of identity: Birds Portchmouth Russum has earned many admirers for its idiosyncratic approach to architecture

Article Abstract:

Birds Portchmouth Russum, a London based architectural practice is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Its mission is to create striking buildings which contribute to their environment. The practice does not have preconceptions with any project, with each scheme about intensifying, or creating a sense of place and identity. An illustrative guide to some of Birds Portchmouth Russum's projects is provided, along with the working details for the car park building, Chichester, a brick and glass-block tower.
