Jardine Fleming Exchange Capital Securities and other large foreign brokers in Manila, Philippines, are doing well as turnover in that market, 60% of it from foreign funds, soars. The most successful such brokers base their operations in Manila rather than Hong Kong or Singapore, and hire locals to run the operations. They have also paid strict attention to research in reaction to the former connection-driven tradition of the bourse. However, rising overseas competition may cut the margins of even the most profitable houses.
