Family dynasty

Article Abstract:

Jean-Luc Lagardere has developed his family-owned holding company, MMB S.A., into the third largest conglomerate in France. The foundation for Groupe Lagardere rests on the French defense electronics giant, Matra S.A., and the publishing company Hachette S.A. Other major firms under the Lagardere umbrella include the French newspaper group Quillet, advertising display company Giraudy, and the recently acquired Banque Arjil. Total group revenues have exceeded $8.4 billion. The rapid growth has followed strategic alliances with select foreign companies, shrewd diversification, an intensive restructuring at Matra, and a series of acquisitions by Hachette . Lagardere has indicated his son, 28-year-old Arnaud Lagardere, will assume control of the business empire when the elder Lagardere retires.
