Fear of Chinese invasion in Taiwan turns surreal amid Sino-U.S. rhetoric clash

Article Abstract:

Public concern has grown over China's possible invasion of Taiwan. China's recent missile tests north of Taiwan contributed to the decline of Taipei's stock market by 10.2%. Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's visit to the US also led to Beijing's accusation that Lee was paving the way for Taiwan's independence. However, an invasion of Taiwan would result in a severing of ties between China and the world economy. Taiwan also has sufficient firepower to defend itself from China.

Taiwan unveils economic plan to protect bruised bourse

Article Abstract:

China's recent attempt to intimidate Taiwan and its resulting impact on the island's stock market illustrates the Taiwanese economy's vulnerability to warlike moves from the mainland. To address this problem, the government has unveiled a $8.6 billion fund to help protect the economy from outside pressure. However, the stock-market stabilization fund has not drawn much reaction from investors, many of whom were expecting a better package.

Taipei tries to soften China rhetoric

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese government has apparently taken a new conciliatory stance towards China after months of tension. Taiwanese officials insist that they remain unaffected by Chinese threats but they also stress the need to defuse the ongoing crisis with its giant neighbor. Many analysts predict that relations between the two sides will eventually improve after the elections in Taiwan.
