Fear of a backlash: Why most advertisers are wary of using out-of-home ads for ethnic targeting

Article Abstract:

Ethnic advertising, as a subdivision of outdoor, can have its problems, such as backlash from the ethnic group targeted and the rest of the population as well. Witness the Reno Sparks (Nevada, US) Convention & Visitors Authority which advertised gambling in Vancouver bus shelters and offended everybody. There seems to be less control over which consumers see the outdoor ads whereas, in print, radio or TV, the media are more targeted to the ethnic group in question. Because the area can so easily offend, many advertisers simply avoid using it altogether.
