Fear of flu ruffles city

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong officials are exterminating 1.2 million chickens in an attempt at stopping the proliferation of a deadly flu strain. The H5N1 flu virus has been passed from chicken to human in the past, resulting in several human deaths. Containment of flu outbreaks in China is vital, for 2 of 3 of the last flu pandemics have origins in this region of China.

Hong Kong's Chief Secretary for Administration, Anson Chan, resigned January 12 amid rumors that she left due to lack of confidence in her boss, Chief Executive in Charge Tung Chee Hwa. Mrs. Chan's beliefs, including full democracy and free speech, angered Beijing's leaders.
