Fear of riots spurs ethnic Chinese to support Mahathir

Article Abstract:

The ethnic Chinese in Malaysia are expressing their strong support for Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Their motivation is fired by a genuine regard for Mahathir as a nation-builder. They are also worried about the negative repercussions of the rioting in the streets after Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was fired from his post. The Federation of Chinese Assembly Halls Pres Chong Chin Shoong expressed his fear of the possible reenactment of the overthrow of Indonesian Pres Suharto when rioters killed the Chinese and looted their stores.

Finance-merger rush begins

Article Abstract:

The Bank Negara Malaysia's announcement that it would like to see merger pacts completed by Mar 31, 1998 has led Malaysian finance firms to begin rushing to consolidate with each other. Hong Leong Bank Bhd reported it intends to take over Bolton Finance Bhd and merge it with Hong Leong Finance Bhd. The DRB-Hicom group also announced it expects to combine with its two finance firms, Credit Corp Bhd and EON Fiance Bhd. Bank Negara Malaysia's strict deadline stresses the exigency to strengthen the resources of Malaysia's 40 finance firms.

Aggrieved souls flock to political party's problem solver

Michael Chong is the most publicized and most vocal problem solver in Malaysia. Michael Chong is Chief of the Malaysian Chinese Association's public services department and is widely known as 'Mr. Fix-it.' Files of the prominent Malaysian have been tapped by a local film company and used as basis for a television series called 'Kisah Benar' which means 'Real-Life Tales.'
