Seatless in Seattle: Compromise on Apec summit leaves Taipei unsatisfied

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese officials are upset over their lack of representation at the proposed Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum Bill Clinton is organizing for Seattle, WA. Chinese leaders have expressed a desire to disallow Taiwan equal representation at the forum because they are a local government. Taiwanese president Lee Teng-hui had said he would be willing to negotiate with Chinese officials but was still not allowed to represent his country. Clinton's desire to not upset the Chinese has left Lee disappointed, at best.

Idling threat: Taipei planners debate chances of a Chinese attack

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese military planners remain highly aware of the military threat that China continues to pose for the island despite relatively relaxed relations. China refuses to disavow the use of force in regard to what it considers a breakaway province, and as the struggle to succeed Deng Xiaoping ensues, it is easy to imagine several scenarios leading to an attack. China's communist govt has a history of making unpredictable attacks where it feels its territories are being illegally usurped.
