Filming Russia's sacred text

Article Abstract:

Alexander Pushkin was a Russian write and author of 'Eugene Onegin', a verse novel on which a motion picture, 'Onegin' has been based. The movie, by Ralph Fiennes, is the first movie to be based on this work, seen as Pushkin's finest. Onegin, who does not feel at home in the country, inherits a country estate. Fiennes sees this portrayal of a man who turns his back on the world as fascinating. Liv Tyler may initially appear to be miscast in the role of Tatyana, but her gawky and coltish beauty appear to fit the part.

VCDs killed the kung fu star

Article Abstract:

Video piracy has hit the Hong Kong motion picture industry, and there have been similar problems for the industry in Taiwan and mainland China. Competition from cable TV and foreign imports, and quality problems have also affected the industry in these countries. Video CD players are increasingly found in Hong Kong homes, and have contributed to a rise in piracy. Funding for making movies is difficult to obtain, and co-productions may be a partial solution.

A new roll for film

Article Abstract:

Motion picture production is moving away from lush camerawork, as is shown by the work of Christopher Doyle, Aleksei Fedorov and Januz Kaminski, among others. The new movie makers are aware of art history, but make references in a different way. Kaminski's work in 'Saving Private Ryan' includes a beach scene which is shot in the style of the photographer, Robert Capa. Kaminski also collaborated on 'Schindler's List', which was mainly in black and white.
