Firms seek front seat in mobile-communications sector; MasterCard's charge system in Japan's taxis show the potential of digital cellular networks

Article Abstract:

MasterCard International has partnered with a Japanese cab company and a cellular network operator to enable passengers to charge their fare. The taxis will be equipped with portable terminals that drivers can use to swipe credit or debit cards. This arrangement also highlights the growing applications for cellular networks and the need for more advanced cellular technologies. The feud between Ericsson and Qualcomm over cellular technology standards is discussed.

Pioneer in debit software

Article Abstract:

Fuji Bank Ltd. hopes that its innovative software that helps people debit transactions directly from their accounts will help it compete in the heavily regulated banking industry. The new software works in tandem with the bank's Web site and enables users to access a variety of other banking services. The company, however, notes that clients are slow to access the new service and that the banking industry is also slow to change traditional banking practices.

MasterCard and Mondex push cash on a chip for Asia's digital world

Article Abstract:

MasterCard International's acquisition of majority ownership of Mondex International benefits both as the former is a leading credit card company while the latter is a banking consortium with a viable smart card technology. These two companies will jointly work on the technology which will enable holders of smart cards to buy anything from merchants that have an installed device for reading these cards.
